I am proud to invite you to The Caption Comics Collective Closedown Party

Friday, August 29, 2008
3:00pm - 11:00pm

The Old Jam Factory,
Hollybush Row, OX1 1HU,
Oxford, United Kingdom

Comics jam, sketching and closedown party for the Caption Comics Collective Exhibition at the Jam Factory. David Baillie, Andy Luke and Daniel Merlin Goodbrey in the afternoon, with Jeremy Dennis and Ellen Lindner coming along in the evening. Possibly others! It's hard to tell with cartoonists. You know what -- you should come along, too.

Facebook Event Listing

Additional Press Info )

Well, the stock is all ready for this Thursday.

Tom McNally's Semiotic Cohesion puts me at ease with sharks,
Daniel Merlin Goodbrey's All Knowledge Is Strange
jolts wicked, poignant and mapped.
Jeremy Dennis' Scattered Leaves, comics that journey through time and mind.
Lambden and Powell's collected Tales From The Flat with character camaraderie in city suburbs and big layers.
My own assortments of recycled rage, with love, comedy and ESP from my life.

Felt Tip Market the name comes from author of Wasted Epiphanies'Deirdre Ruane Its good but not disposable a name. I'll be selling these comics at Gloucester Green Market, leaving just before 7am. Thats the hope. My emails and phone calls to the local council havent been returned and I'm going on the talk circulated with other stallholders. The person I spoke to in the farmers market assures me the antiques and arts bit operates alongside on the 1st and 3rd of each month.

Unlike those baby faced Camden boys with their covered market and probably a mention from Simon Amnstell, I'll be braving whatever elements are distributed. I havent a polythene top in case it rains sideways, I think hitting Staples or a bigstore for some delivery packaging. Got my tablecloth in the form of a spare bed lining and a pen and paper and some loose change. Theres a listing up on Oxford's Daily Info and pop up on the dreamingspires community in a bit.

I'll probably not Felt Tip Market next week unless the test flight is an overwhelming success. For those who missed my initial post, table costs at Oxford's Gloucester Green Market are 13pounds for a half (which would do) and presumably double for a table thats just huge. Now that I think back to Oli's planning, I ought to get those boxed comics into a wheely travel bag. A simpler weather protecter, and bus ride. I also should look for a burly man with clear address and directing skills.

Knowing the comics I'm selling is a big help, though most customers are best left with little persuasion to their own reading skills. Theyre not likely to grab me and squeel "Sell me a comic which comic must has now!" Or maybe they will. If that happens I'm primed to direct them.

I can say to them, John Robbins Sad Chemistry is like having free cartoons all_the_time, or Itch Publishing's Rubins, Hewes and Korsten have Japanese supermarket spirits ! Or, "A shirt and tie? In the office? A Caption T-shirt will win you a greater financial value!

And a reminder that you can buy many more of these exciting accessories to life um, there, there it is. With a special artist's take down party towards the end of the month.

I'm to go through my notes, [info]phlebas I have a brilliant group of ideas for a photo-comic. And anyone else whos interested.

[info]hitsb, Gaurav, Imhran, Cammy and I  re-enacted the good ole times, met a man who brought about a Penguin Biscuit and Pun Round. Fat Boyz Pizza can be arranged as Fab Toys Pizza, and a while we ate Four Cheeses, and slices with mushrooms, and jalapeno peppers  those that hid under The Olive Interpretation.

Yesterday was an Alan Moore kinda day.

Spent getting in training for the 24hour comics. I've a story that I've been putting off writing every day for so long now. I made a start. Drew all these things. Accomplishment is good. Day off work, also good.

Well, its been a great few days for me, and its time to mix the pot once again.

LONDON - WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 12TH & WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 19TH : MASS LONE DEMONSTRATIONS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF YOUR COMICS

Yes, to demonstrate in certain areas of London you now need to get written permission from the police six days in advance. So, why not stand in line and use your unique social skills to pitch your comics to a bunch of similarly disenfranchised outsiders ? I'm considering carrying a placard bearing the words, 'STOP CUTTING ARTS COUNCIL FUNDING TO KIDSON AND KENNEDY'

Do you have a new comic strip you want to promote, or an old collection viciously being attacked by dust mites that needs defending by THE READER !!

I KNOW WERE YOU LIVE !

or you could protest against the war or something, i dunno

You need to read this (link), and then you need to tell other people. And you need to come back here and say 'Yeah, those cartoonists who arent doing it are just a bunch of poosays' (or busy at work or something, you know how things are, starving artist recession recession) or,  'HELL ANDY YEAH      - HOOOOOYYYYAAAAAA!'

and shes even writing like me in my head - Next Tuesday, Comics and Activism in Oxford meet. From their website,

Tuesday 12th June 2007 - 7:00pm-8:30pm - Main space
Contact: Andrew Luke

Theres nothing more cunning than a cunning plan, and oh is this a plan. Whats better than activism? Reading! (OK which one of you said sex? I heard you). Ahem, where were we? Whats a really cool format to read stuff in: graphic novels! Sooo, why not combine the two? This meeting is part of a summer activism project that an artist and writer wants to get off the ground ASAP. It takes its cue from those mass pre-printed lobbying cards that often show up on stands at events like Shared Planet. The idea is to maybe do a bunch of them in a booklet introduced by a page/page and a half each in comic book form Artists, co-editors, activists and geeks come one, come all!
(event confirmed)

And this is as good a post as any to mention this,

Swiped from[info]josephartist, and ill-considered. For what its worth at an unusual hour of the morning......

01) Eagle (1980s) is the first comic book I really got into.
02) ...... is one of the comics I currently collect. (Next !)
03) The Batman is one of my all-time favourite superheroes.
04) The Fixer: A Story from Sarajevo is my favourite non-superhero comic.
05) Venom is a very overrated character (currently, at least...)
06) .Jack T Chick is, in my opinion, a very overrated comic artist.
07) Grant Morrison is one of my favourite comic book writers.
08) Meeting new and old friendships through comics is a happy comic book memory for me.
09) Eddie Campbell is awesome at drawing female characters.
10) ....is one of my all-time favourite comic artists. (Too many to mention)
11) ..... is an artist I'd love to see drawing a monthly series. (n/a)
12) Love and Rockets is a comic I've meant to read, but haven't done so yet.
13) Automan is a welcome '80s comeback.
14) Diamond Previews is a comic I've never read or paid much attention to.
15) Venom is a popular character I've never really paid attention to.
16) Watchmen is a title I would recommend to my friends.
17) Mr. Nile is one of my favourite comic villains.
18) Sin City is a comic I'm glad they made into a movie/movie franchise.
19)  ...is a comic they totally ruined by making it into a movie. (it cannot be done, such is the power of the medium! ha !)
20) Simon Furman is someone I would really love to meet at a comic convention.
21) Foggy Nelson is a character I can see myself being for Halloween.
22) Transformers is a comic I used to love, but now I'm not so hot about.
23) Graham Betthany is someone I would love to work on a comic book with.
24) £5 is the most I'll spend on a 22-page (average sized) comic.
25) Top Ten is something/someone they should bring back.

Theres a review of a mini-comic by Cartoon Kate Evans over at TRS2 this morning. I really must get round to returning that to the Oxford Action Resource Centre. Its a marvellous service that has been thrown into some turmoil following the financial insecurity of the East Oxford Community Centre Social Club. Caption attendees and other supporters will be happy to learn that as of a few weeks ago, the bar has been re-opened.

Exam Revision Comics Disclaimer

I'll take any questions about those comics sometime later as i like food and bed very. Briefly though, I'd gotten so slackbrained about the concept of revision, I thought it would it be scientifically prudent to make revision comics. About six hours per module, mostly in one sitting. These were originally intended for my eyes only but became much more interesting than that. Please do not rely on these as a study aid, although if they make fun learning they've worked beyond what they were meant for.

Well, I've just sat my exam for Understanding Society 2: Transformations, and I feel fairly confident I've got a grade B. The revision notes helped largely, though I missed out a key area in them and that felt costly, scuppering through I think because of my veteran Sociology studiousness.
I'l be posting the notes for that one and for tomorrow mornings exam up in the next hour. If you already know what I'm talking about you might wanna spread the word. And wish me luck !

It may seem slightly cruel of me to pause and rewind and pause and play and pause and play and pause and play again, but when the cream pie is on his face you can really make out this monster whore of satan's distinguishing features in some great detail.

Last night, I also watched,  Mark Thomas : Weapons Inspector (one of the few full length shows from original UK transmission), Mark Thomas protesting in Parliament Squaremeeting surveillance cops when reporting on CCTV and the Data protection Act and Mark Thomas trying to get shot by kicking a football into 10 Downing st, buckingham palace and a prison.

Now, I'm going to finish the comics I were working on. I may not have an option. I got off the bus after the pub and have been in the university computer rooms for the last five and a half hours because of the rain !

Went to check out the new FF movie trailer at Sparkymark's advice and discovered my favourite sci-fi tv show is hurrah on dvd ! I will be buying one.

Andrew Luke's Public Office will be closed from 5pm this evening until Sunday when it may re-open for some comics related matters. Latecomers with birthday wishes might like to leave them here.

Next week, I'm hoping to avoid doing this

all over again.

This afternoon I will give a presentation on Jiddu Krishnamurti at Harcourt Hill campus, draw my missing MCR panel and scan that page in. Tomorrow, I'm spending with a very lovely lady,

I drifted into Saturday augment of coach’s lazy bods and difficult in-trip sandwich-making. The Mile End tube station did not seem as efficient as Stepney Green for distance walking, though as the Great Hall venue is near a business sector, it seemed a geographically proficient and developmentally worthwhile walk.
